Het Schoonselhof was oorspronkelijk een kasteeldomein. Het centrale deel rond het kasteel en vijver dateert uit de 18e eeuw. In 1911 kocht de Stad Antwerpen het domein om er een begraafplaats van te maken. Die keuze bleek uiteindelijk niet evident omdat het gebied gekenmerkt wordt door een hoge grondwatertafel en drijfzandlagen. Het netwerk van grachten en sloten, dat kenmerkend is voor het domein, was nodig om er te kunnen begraven. Die waterstructuur is voor allerlei fauna en flora interessant zoals libellen en amfibieën. De open graslanden worden op verschillende wijzen beheerd.
