Durbuy liegt im bekannten Kalkrand des Devoonkalksteins. Der Kalkrand ist ein schmales Band südlich der Fagne-Famenne und besteht fast ausschließlich aus Kalkstein des Oberdevons. Er liegt wie eine Treppenstufe zu den Ardennen. Er liegt deutlich höher als die Senke der Fagne-Famenne. Die Flüsse aus den Ardennen, die diese Region durchqueren, zeigen bemerkenswerte Lösungsphänomene. In der Geologie bezeichnet man diese Lösungsphänomene als Karst.
