Das Dorf Stevoort wurde 1136 als Steinvert erwähnt, 11 Jahre später wurde es als Sintvort geschrieben. 1256 wurde der Ort als Stevoort genannt. Der Ortsname könnte mit Steinen bedeuten, stein oder stin ist abgeleitet von dem germanischen Wort 'stains', das für Stein steht, und vert/vort könnte von 'furdu' abgeleitet sein, was 'durchwatbare Stelle' bedeutet. Der Name erinnert also an die primitive Art und Weise, wie unsere Vorfahren einen Durchgang durch ein Gewässer schufen, wie auch im Namen der Städte Steinfurt und Stanford.
