The village of Stevoort was mentioned in 1136 as Steinvert, and 11 years later it was written as Sintvort. In 1256, the place was recorded as Stevoort. The place name is said to mean 'wet with stones', with 'stein' or 'stin' derived from the Germanic word 'stains', which means stone, and 'vert/vort' possibly derived from 'furdu', meaning 'ford'. The name thus recalls the primitive way in which our ancestors created a crossing over a waterway, as is also seen in the names of the cities of Steinfurt and Stanford.
