Seit Beginn des Achtzigjährigen Krieges wurde Middelburg mehrfach verwüstet und die Umgebung der Stadt geriet unter den Einfluss des Meeres. Als die Statthalter 1604 das benachbarte Aardenburg eroberten, begannen die Spanier sofort, Middelburg zu befestigen. Anstelle von Steinmauern und Holztoren entstanden kanonfeuerbeständige Erdwälle und kleine Bastionen. Die Burg wurde herabgesetzt und verstärkt. Später kamen noch große Bastionen an den Ecken der Befestigungsmauer hinzu. Heute ist die Form der bastionierten Stadt noch deutlich erkennbar. Die Position der beiden Bastionen an der Grenze ist an den Grundstücksformen zu erkennen. Vom östlichen Bastion sind sogar die Konturen noch gut zu sehen, dank einer kürzlichen Umprofilierung.
