Fin dall'inizio della Guerra degli Ottant'anni, Middelburg è stata più volte distrutta e l'area circostante è stata influenzata dal mare. Quando gli Stati conquistarono Aardenburg nel 1604, gli spagnoli iniziarono subito a rinforzare Middelburg. Al posto di mura di pietra e porte di legno, furono costruite mura di terra resistenti al fuoco dei cannoni e piccoli bastioni. Il castello fu abbassato e rinforzato. In seguito furono aggiunti grandi bastioni agli angoli delle mura fortificate. Oggi la forma della città bastionata è ancora chiaramente riconoscibile. La posizione dei due bastioni al confine è identificabile grazie alle forme dei lotti. Del bastione orientale sono addirittura visibili le contorni, grazie a una recente riprofilatura.
