Die Übergänge von Wiese und Äckern zu Wäldern sollten idealerweise allmählich erfolgen. In den Kräuter- und Strauchschichten leben viele interessante Insekten, Schmetterlinge und Vögel. Auch für viele Säugetiere sind diese Schichten wichtig als Unterschlupf. Die Nagetiere dienen ihrerseits als Beute für beispielsweise den Turmfalken.
