Das Amt für Natur und Wald (flämische Regierung) verwaltet etwa 400 Hektar des Waldes, andere Teile sind noch in Privatbesitz. Ein großer Teil, das Maldegemveld, wird von Natuurpunt verwaltet. Der Drongengoedwald ist bekannt für seine große Vielfalt an Pilzen und Nachtfaltern. Aber auch die Vielfalt an Laub- und Nadelwald, abwechselnd mit nassen Wiesen und Heiden, weiß viele Pflanzen- und Tierarten zu begeistern. Die zahlreichen Alleen und Baumreihen sind wichtige „ökologische Autobahnen“, auf denen Pflanzen und Tiere problemlos migrieren können. Es ist daher nicht verwunderlich, dass das Drongengoed-Maldegemveld, einschließlich des Flughafens, europäisch geschützt ist.
