Im Jahr 1794 gründete eine Gruppe französischer Mönche der Zisterzienserordens die Abtei der Trappisten von Westmalle. Innerhalb der Mauern der Abtei brauen die Mönche ihr eigenes Bier (Westmalle Tripel, Dubbel und Extra), stellen sie Trappistenkäse her und arbeiten auf dem Bauernhof. Momentan leben dort etwa 35 Mönche, die ein zurückgezogenes Leben aus Gebet, Studium und Arbeit führen. Daher kann die Abtei und die Brauerei nicht besucht werden.
An der Abtei beginnt der Wanderweg Trappistenpad (8 km) und die Fahrradrunde Trappistenroute (44 km). Gegenüber der Abtei, im Café Trappisten, kannst du nach einem Glas Trappistenbier vom Fass und einer Portion Abteikäse entspannen. Auch die köstlichen Abteikäsekroketten sind ein Muss!
