Nel 1794 un gruppo di monaci francesi dell'ordine cistercense fondò l'abbazia dei trappisti di Westmalle. All'interno delle mura dell'abbazia, i monaci producono la propria birra (Westmalle Tripel, Dubbel e Extra), preparano formaggio trappista e lavorano nella fattoria. Attualmente vivono circa 35 monaci, che conducono una vita ritirata di preghiera, studio e lavoro. Pertanto, non è possibile visitare né l'abbazia né il birrificio.
Dall'abbazia parte il sentiero Trappistenpad (8 km) e il percorso in bicicletta Trappistenroute (44 km). Di fronte all'abbazia, al caffè Trappisten, puoi gustare un bicchiere di trappista dal fusto e una porzione di formaggio dell'abbazia. Anche le deliziose crocchette di formaggio dell'abbazia sono da non perdere!
