Während des Ersten Weltkriegs war die Gegend um Kampenhout-Sas im August 1914 Schauplatz heftiger Kämpfe zwischen der deutschen Invasionsarmee und den belgischen Streitkräften. Die Deutschen konnten sich in der Nähe des Sas neu gruppieren, die zerstörte Brücke wieder herstellen und überquerten um den 9. September 1914 den Kanal, um die Belgier über Keerbergen und Putte nach Lier zurückzudrängen. Alle Häuser in der Umgebung von Kampenhout-Sas waren zerstört und das Dorf Relst wurde vollständig von der Karte getilgt.
