During World War I, the area around Kampenhout-Sas was the scene of fierce fighting between the German invasion army and the Belgian forces in August 1914. The Germans were able to regroup near the sas, repaired the destroyed bridge, and crossed the canal around September 9, 1914, to push the Belgians back through Keerbergen, Putte to Lier. All houses in the vicinity of Kampenhout-Sas were destroyed, and the hamlet of Relst was completely wiped off the map.
