Die Kasematten sind Teil der Stadtbefestigungen. Es sind bombensichere gewölbte Räume, die von Soldaten genutzt wurden, um Munition zu lagern, Lebensmittel zu bewahren oder alsUnterschlupf für Soldaten und Geschütze. Auch während des Zweiten Weltkriegs suchten die Bewohner während Bombenangriffen Schutz. Die Kasematten waren Teil des Bastions der Leie. Ursprünglich gab es 30 Kasematten, jetzt sind noch 11 übrig. Sie stammen aus der holländischen Periode, als Menen eine Barriere-Stadt an der Zuidgrenze des Königreichs der Niederlande war. Sie wurden auf einer unteren Reihe von Kasematten erbaut, die möglicherweise von dem französischen Festungsbauer Vauban Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts entworfen wurden.
