Du kannst dir heute vielleicht schwer vorstellen, aber die Neder-Schelde, die hier an dir vorbeifließt, wurde 1960 zugeschüttet, um einen Parkplatz zu schaffen. Mehr als tausend Jahre Gentser Geschichte wurden in einem Augenblick unter Erde und Stein begraben. Doch nicht jeder gab sich damit zufrieden. Der König Auto bekam allmählich Gegenwind. Das Stadtzentrum wurde autofrei gemacht, zugunsten von Fußgängern und Radfahrern. Außerdem wollte man wieder Wasser in die Reep bringen, wie es immer gewesen war. Und so geschah es! Der Boden wurde wieder aufgebrochen. Die Kaibewässer wurden wiederhergestellt. Und 2018 wurde die Schelde unter lautem Jubel wieder zur Leie geleitet.
