Vous avez peut-être du mal à l'imaginer aujourd'hui, mais l'Escaut qui s'écoule ici devant vous a été recouvert en 1960 pour aménager un parking. Plus de mille ans d'histoire gantoise ont été enfouis en un clin d'œil sous la terre et la pierre. Mais tout le monde ne s'est pas résigné. La voiture a lentement rencontré une résistance. Le centre-ville a été déclaré piétonnier, au profit des piétons et des cyclistes. De plus, on voulait à nouveau de l'eau dans la Reep, comme cela avait toujours été le cas. Et ainsi ce fut ! Le sol a été à nouveau déterré. Les quais ont été restaurés. Et en 2018, l'Escaut a été à nouveau dirigé vers la Lys sous de vives acclamations.
