Das Schloss von Zellaer wurde 1885 auf Auftrag von Baron de Vrière erbaut. Die neogotische Wasserburg wurde von dem Mechelner Architekten Heugenbaarts entworfen und ist eine Kopie eines Loire-Schlosses aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Die Steine stammten von den Festungen von Vilvoorde. Ursprünglich stand bereits im Mittelalter des 13. Jahrhunderts eine feudale Wasserburg, errichtet von Wouter Berthout. Zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts gab es auch bereits einen Arnold von Zellaer als ersten Bewohner.
1962 ließ sich der Laienorden Foyer de Charité dort nieder und bis 2016 wurde das Schloss als diözesanes Exerzitienzentrum genutzt. Seit 2001 sind sowohl das Schloss als auch das Pferdehaus als Monument geschützt. 2017 wurde die Gemeinde Bonheiden zu zwanzig Prozent Eigentümer des Lands und das gesamte Gelände wird in Erbpacht an die vzw 'Kempens Landschap' vergeben. Die Ambition besteht darin, das Gelände 2018 für alle zugänglich zu machen.
