Um das 12. bis 13. Jahrhundert wurde Sint-Pieters-Kapelle noch Hunckevliet genannt. Als eine gläubige Frau eine Kapelle zu Ehren des heiligen Petrus erbauen ließ und später eine Pfarrkirche mit diesem Namen errichtet wurde, änderte sich auch der Name des Dorfes allmählich. Im Ersten Weltkrieg wurde das Dorf praktisch vollständig zerstört, aber anschließend wieder aufgebaut, einschließlich der Sint-Pieterskirche von 1923.
