Als ob die Plünderungen der Armeen im 17. Jahrhundert in dieser Region nicht genug waren, infizierten die Soldaten die lokale Bevölkerung mit Krankheiten wie Pest, Dysenterie und Geschlechtskrankheiten. Im Jahr 1678 bricht hier eine schwere Pestepidemie in Sint-Laureins-Berchem aus. Die Kranken werden in Quarantäne in einer "cabane" untergebracht, die später den Ortsnamen "'t Zieckhuys" behielt.
