Im Jahr 1973 begann man mit den Bauarbeiten für das, was ein Ersatz für das alte Gefängnis Saint-Léonard in Lüttich werden sollte, das aus dem Jahr 1851 stammt. 1979 wurde dieses Gefängnis, das zu den größten Belgiens gehört, eröffnet. Das Gefängnis Saint-Léonard wurde, sechs Monate bevor die Insassen nach Lantin verlegt werden sollten, von einem Streik der Aufseher betroffen, von dem die Insassen profitierten, indem sie einen Aufstand begannen. Dies führte zu Ausbrüchen und Zerstörungen im Gefängnis. Schließlich wurde dieses Gefängnis von 1982 bis 1983 abgerissen. Auf dem ehemaligen Gefängnisgelände wurde ein Park und ein Platz angelegt.
