Die ehemaligen Landfahrer-Kolonien von Wortel und Merksplas streben eine Anerkennung als UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe an. Und das zu Recht, denn diese weitläufigen Domänen gehören zur absoluten Spitze unter den flämischen Naturschutzgebieten. Ein Teil des ehemaligen Landfahrerhofs wurde von Natuurpunt Markvallei in ein Besucherzentrum umgebaut. Es bietet unter anderem Platz für das Jan Spannenburgmuseum, benannt nach einem der Pioniere des Naturschutzes in den Noorderkempen, und ist der Ausgangspunkt für viele Radfahrer und Wanderer in den Kolonien. Im Café können wir Ihnen ein Gageleer empfehlen, ein biologisches Regionale Bier, oder einen Wortelse Tongklever, einen Genever auf Basis von Schlehenbeeren.
