De tidligere omstrejfkolonier i Wortel og Merksplas søger anerkendelse som UNESCO-verdensarv. Og med god grund, for disse omfattende områder tilhører den absolutte elite blandt de flamske naturreservater. En del af den tidligere omstrejflandbrug blev ombygget af Natuurpunt Markvallei til et besøgscenter. Det tilbyder blandt andet husly til Jan Spannenburg-museet, opkaldt efter en af pionererne inden for naturbeskyttelse i Nordkempen, og det er udgangspunkt for mange cyklister og vandrere i kolonierne. I caféen kan vi anbefale en Gageleer, et økologisk lokalt øl, eller en Wortelse tungeklæber, en genever baseret på sveskebær.
