Das Marum ist der nordöstlichste Teil des Groot Schietveld (Brasschaat, Brecht und Wuustwezel) und ist seit 1890 militärisches Gebiet. Lange Zeit war es ein unzugänglicher Ort für Schießübungen, aber seit 2010 ist es als sichere Wanderzone eingeschränkt für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Das Gebiet gehört dem Ministerium für Verteidigung und wird von der Agentur für Natur und Wald verwaltet.
