Oberkirch liegt am Nordwestende des Sempachersees an der Suhre und ist mit der nördlich liegenden Stadt Sursee zusammengewachsen. Nebst der Hauptsiedlung sind auch die Ortsteile Seehäusern und Kotten mit der Nachbarstadt verwachsen. Der Weiler Renzligen/Sennhof liegt 2,2 km südwestlich, der Weiler Dogelzwil 1,5 km südwestlich, der Ortsteil St. Margrethen südöstlich des Dorfs. Grösster Ortsteil ausserhalb der Hauptsiedlung ist Unterer Leidenberg 2 km nordwestlich.
Oberkirch grenzt im Norden an Sursee, auf der anderen Seite des Sees im Nordosten an Schenkon und im Osten an Eich, im Südosten an Nottwil, im Süden an Buttisholz, im Südwesten an Grosswangen und im Nordwesten an Mauensee.
