Die Universität Basel wurde im Jahr 1460 gegründet und ist somit die älteste Universität der Schweiz.
Sie gilt unter anderem auch aufgrund des geistigen Erbes des hier wirkenden Erasmus von Rotterdam als eine der Geburtsstätten des europäischen Humanismus. Im 19. Jahrhundert zählte dann neben dem Kunsthistoriker Jacob Burckhardt zu den berühmtesten Personen, die an der Universität lehrten, auch der deutsche Philosoph und Dichter Friedrich Nietzsche . Insgesamt haben an der Universität bis dato neun Nobelpreisträger und zwei Schweizer Bundespräsidenten studiert respektive gelehrt.
