Im frühen 19. Jahrhundert ging der Bergbau tiefer in den Boden und erreichte die viel schwerer zugänglichen Kohlenflöze. Riesige Dampfmaschinen sorgten für die Entwässerung der Tunnel, die gleichzeitig mit mehreren Etagen gebaut wurden. Der Ertrag nahm enorm zu. Die fette Kohle war sehr gut für die Verarbeitung zu Koks geeignet.
Als dieser Komplex eröffnet wurde, war es die modernste Mine der Welt. Darüber hinaus war der Bau mit Ziegeln und Stahl ein architektonisches Meisterwerk.
Das Gelände beherbergt heute Restaurants, Designunternehmen und ein Besucherzentrum, das über die längste Rolltreppe in Europa 'hergestellt von ThyssenKrupp' zu erreichen ist. Ein Casino befindet sich ebenfalls mitten in den schön beleuchteten Koksbatterien.
