Ponitz ist eine Gemeinde im thüringischen Landkreis Altenburger Land und liegt an der Grenze zum Freistaat Sachsen. Bekannt ist der Ort vor allem durch das Renaissanceschloss, wie auch durch die Friedenskirche mit ihrer unverändert erhaltenen Orgel Gottfried Silbermanns.
Ponitz befindet sich nördlich der Bundesautobahn 4 und der Stadt Crimmitschau am Übergang des Zeitzer-Schmöllner-Lösshügellandes in die Vorgebirgslagen zum Thüringer Schiefergebirge und zum Erzgebirge. Durch das Gemeindegebiet fließt in Richtung Norden die Pleiße. Große Ackerflächen, Weiden und wenig Bewaldung prägen das Landschaftsbild. Die nächsten Städte sind Meerane , Gößnitz , Crimmitschau und Schmölln .
