Die Gemeinde Cornberg am Oberlauf der Sontra liegt im Nordosten von Hessen im Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg. Cornberg ist die nach Einwohnerzahl kleinste Gemeinde des Landkreises und die drittkleinste Gemeinde Hessens.
Die Gemeinde liegt zwischen den jeweils 27 km entfernten Städten Bad Hersfeld im Süden und Eschwege im Norden. Das Gemeindegebiet liegt zwischen dem Stölzinger Gebirge und dem Richelsdorfer Gebirge. Die Sontra fließt durch die Ortsteile Rockensüß und Königswald. Durch Cornberg selber fließt der Bach Cornberger Wasser, der bei Berneburg in den Fluss Sontra fließt.
