Kaulsdorf liegt im südöstlichen Thüringen im Landkreis Saalfeld-Rudolstadt direkt im Saaletal, am Eingang zum Thüringer Schiefergebirge inmitten einer Mittelgebirgslandschaft mit steilen Berghängen.
