Das Dorf wurde im Ratzeburger Zehntregister von 1230 zum ersten Mal urkundlich erwähnt und ist ein ehemaliges Fischerdorf. Um 1500 hieß der Ort Landsatze. Am 17. April 1893 brannte das gesamte Dorf durch Brandstiftung nieder. Bis 1964 war das Land rund um Lanze auch häufig von Hochwassern betroffen, ein Pumpwerk entwässert heute die südliche Feldmark.
Von den neun Sitzen in der Gemeindevertretung hat die Wählergemeinschaft WGL seit der Kommunalwahl 2013 vier Sitze und die Wählergemeinschaft AAL fünf.
