Krefeld ist eine linksrheinisch gelegene Großstadt am Niederrhein. Die kreisfreie Stadt im Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf wird aufgrund der Seidenstoffproduktion des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts auch als „Samt- und Seidenstadt“ bezeichnet. Krefeld nahm Ende 2019 mit rund 227.500 Einwohnern unter den Großstädten Nordrhein-Westfalens den 14. Platz ein. Das Oberzentrum gehört zur Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr sowie zur Metropolregion Rheinland.
