Lauchringen besteht als Gesamtgemeinde seit 1971 im Zuge der Gemeindereform durch den Zusammenschluss der beiden Ortschaften Oberlauchringen und Unterlauchringen. Die Gemeinde ist ein Kleinzentrum mit dem Schwerpunkt in Unterlauchringen
Der Teilort Oberlauchringen ist wesentlich älter. Unterlauchringen entstand als Siedlung bei der mittelalterlichen Mühle am Wutach-Lauffen und wurde in der Nachkriegszeit zum Hauptort mit Gemeindeverwaltung und Geschäftsstraße.
