Großolbersdorf ist ein Waldhufendorf im mittleren Teil des Erzgebirges, mit einer groben Ost-West-Ausrichtung. Es liegt im Naturraum Mittelerzgebirge.
Im Osten grenzt es an den Bornwald und reicht im Westen bis zum Zschopautal. Im Norden grenzt die Stadt Zschopau an den Ort und im Süden die Stadt Wolkenstein.
Höchster Punkt des Ortes ist der Zeisighübel mit 642 m Höhe, tiefster Punkt ist die Zschopau mit 358 m.
