Schwelm ist eine über 500 Jahre alte Stadt in Westfalen, gelegen unmittelbar an der Grenze zum Rheinland. Als heutige Kreisstadt des Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreises wird Schwelm mit dem Kreis zusammen dem nördlich ausgebreiteten Ruhrgebiet zugeordnet. Südwärts geht die Stadt in die landschaftlich geprägten Hochflächen des Bergisch-Sauerländischen Gebirges über. Schwelms Geschichte, Kultur, Stadtbild und lokale Wirtschaft wurden über Jahrhunderte durch die Grenzlage zwischen Westfalen und Rheinland geprägt. Schwelm ist die nach Fläche kleinste politische Gemeinde in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
