Vegesack liegt an der Mündung der Lesum in die Weser. An Vegesack grenzen im Nordwesten Blumenthal, im Südosten Burglesum und im Norden die niedersächsische Gemeinde Schwanewede. Am gegenüberliegenden Ufer liegt die niedersächsische Gemeinde Lemwerder.
Das Zentrum des Stadtteils bietet vielfältige Freizeit- und Einkaufsmöglichkeiten in der weitläufigen Fußgängerzone.
