Ahrensbök ist nach den beiden kreisfreien Städten Lübeck und Kiel sowie der Stadt Fehmarn die nach Fläche viertgrößte Gemeinde des Bundeslandes Schleswig-Holstein.
Die zum Kreis Ostholstein gehörende Großgemeinde Ahrensbök ist aufgrund ihrer geschichtlichen Entwicklung wirtschaftlicher Mittelpunkt eines größeren ländlichen Bereichs . Im Ort Ahrensbök selbst wohnt gut die Hälfte der Einwohner der Gemeinde. Die andere Hälfte wohnt in den 19 Dorfschaften Vorwerk Ahrensbök, Barghorst, Böbs, Cashagen, Dakendorf, Dunkelsdorf, Gießelrade, Gnissau, Grebenhagen, Havekost, Hohenhorst, Holstendorf, Lebatz, Schwienkuhlen, Schwochel, Siblin, Spechserholz, Tankenrade und Vorwerk-Neuhof.
