Lemgo [ˈlɛmgoː] ist eine Hochschulstadt mit ca. 41.000 Einwohnern. Sie ist die drittgrößte Stadt des Kreises Lippe und liegt 25 Kilometer östlich von Bielefeld mitten in der Region Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Die Stadt gehört zum Regierungsbezirk Detmold im Nordosten von Nordrhein-Westfalen.
Lemgo wurde 1190 an einem Kreuzungspunkt wichtiger Handelswege als Planstadt durch die Herren zu Lippe gegründet. Damit ist der Ort neben dem heute im Kreis Soest liegenden Lippstadt eine der ältesten lippischen Städte. Seit 1245 besitzt Lemgo die Stadtrechte, war im Spätmittelalter Mitglied der Hanse und nennt sich daher auch Alte Hansestadt Lemgo. Das Stadtbild wird durch zahlreiche spätmittelalterliche Bauwerke geprägt. Bis 1973 war Lemgo Sitz der Verwaltung des Kreises Lemgo, der im Rahmen einer Kreisgebietsreform im Kreis Lippe aufging. Seit 1980 ist Lemgo Sitz des Landesverbandes Lippe.
