Marl ist eine Große kreisangehörige Stadt im nördlichen Ruhrgebiet in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Mit 83.697 Einwohnern ist sie die zweitgrößte Stadt des Kreises Recklinghausen im Regierungsbezirk Münster, laut Landesentwicklungsplan ein Mittelzentrum und gehört zur Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr.
Schon vor der Verleihung der Stadtrechte im Jahr 1936 erlebte die heutige Große Mittelstadt einen raschen wirtschaftlichen sowie kulturellen Aufstieg und entwickelte sich innerhalb von 60 Jahren von einem westfälischen Dorf beinahe zu einer Großstadt. Noch heute ist die Stadt von den Branchen Chemie und Bergbau geprägt und beheimatet mit dem Chemiepark Marl einen der größten Chemie-Verbundstandorte in Europa. Mit der Zeche Auguste Victoria war Marl bis 2015 die drittletzte Steinkohlebergbaustadt Deutschlands. Bundesweit bekannt ist Marl vor allem für das hier ansässige Grimme-Institut.
