Balve [ˈbalvə], eine Kleinstadt in Nordrhein-Westfalen mit Stadtrecht seit 1430, liegt im Hönnetal, einem Flusstal im Sauerland. Über viele Jahrhunderte war die Stadt eine Grenzfestung des kurkölnischen Sauerlandes. Ihr Wahlspruch „Säu faste ärre Balve“ ist Ausdruck ihrer Wehrhaftigkeit und stammt aus der Zeit des Truchsessischen Krieges. Stadtpatron ist der Evangelist und Apostel Johannes.
