Das Land Waldeck entstand im Mittelalter um die Burg Waldeck an der Eder im Nordwesten des heutigen Bundeslandes Hessen als selbständige Grafschaft des Heiligen Römischen Reiches. 1712 wurde es zum Fürstentum mit der Residenzstadt Arolsen , das zudem von 1848 bis 1921 staatsrechtlich mit der Grafschaft Pyrmont zu Waldeck-Pyrmont vereinigt war.
Infolge der Novemberrevolution von 1918 wurde aus dem Fürstentum ein Freistaat. 1921 wurde Pyrmont wieder abgetrennt und in Preußen eingegliedert; der verbliebene Freistaat Waldeck wurde 1929 durch Eingliederung in die preußische Provinz Hessen-Nassau aufgelöst.
