Die Talsperre dient der Trinkwasserversorgung und dem Hochwasserschutz und liegt etwa 5 km östlich von Wiehl. Ihr Speicherinhalt beträgt bei Vollstau ca. 31,5 Mio. m³ bei einer Wasserfläche von rd. 2,2 km².
Der Stausee erstreckt sich überwiegend in Ost-West-Richtung, seine Breite liegt zwischen 80 und 500 m, die Länge beträgt rund 6,5 km. Für den Bau mussten ab Mitte der 1960er Jahre rund 450 Menschen aus den Dörfern Auchel, Berg, Dresbach, Finkenrath, Hohl, Jägerhaus, Niederodenspiel, Nothausen, Sprenklingen, Strießhard und Ufersmühle ihre Heimat verlassen. Auch die 9,6 km lange Bahnstrecke Brüchermühle–Wildbergerhütte fiel dem Stauseebau zum Opfer. Die Inbetriebnahme und Aufnahme der Wasserversorgung aus der Wiehltalsperre erfolgte 1973.
