La presa sirve para el suministro de agua potable y la protección contra inundaciones, y se encuentra a unos 5 km al este de Wiehl. Su capacidad de almacenamiento es de aproximadamente 31,5 millones de m³ con una superficie de agua de aproximadamente 2,2 km².
El embalse se extiende predominantemente en dirección este-oeste, su ancho varía entre 80 y 500 m, y su longitud es de aproximadamente 6,5 km. Para su construcción, desde mediados de la década de 1960, alrededor de 450 personas de las aldeas de Auchel, Berg, Dresbach, Finkenrath, Hohl, Jägerhaus, Niederodenspiel, Nothausen, Sprenklingen, Strießhard y Ufersmühle tuvieron que abandonar su hogar. También se sacrificó la línea de ferrocarril de 9,6 km de Brüchermühle–Wildbergerhütte para la construcción del embalse. La puesta en funcionamiento y el inicio del suministro de agua de la presa de Wiehl se realizó en 1973.
