Die Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln ist die einzige deutsche Sportuniversität. Sie entstand aus der Deutschen Hochschule für Leibesübungen , die 1920 von Carl Diem und August Bier in Berlin gegründet wurde. Gründungsrektor der Kölner Hochschule war 1947 ebenfalls Carl Diem, der bis zu seinem Tod 1962 Rektor blieb. Seit dem 20. Mai 2014 ist Heiko K. Strüder Rektor der DSHS, Kanzlerin ist seit Mitte August 2020 Marion Steffen. Das Rektorat wird ergänzt durch die Prorektoren für Studium, Lehre und Qualitätsmanagement , Forschung, wissenschaftliches Personal und Nachwuchs , Planung, Ressourcen und Berufungen , Wissens- und Technologietransfer sowie für Kommunikation, Digitalisierung und Diversität .
