Die Saale oder Sächsische Saale, früher auch Thüringische Saale oder Vogtländische Saale, ist ein Fluss in Bayern, Thüringen und Sachsen-Anhalt. Bei einer Länge von 413 Kilometern ist sie nach der Moldau der zweitlängste Nebenfluss der Elbe. Mit einem mittleren Abfluss von 117 m³/s nimmt sie in der Rangfolge der wasserreichsten Nebenflüsse knapp vor der Havel ebenfalls Platz zwei hinter der Moldau ein. Die Saale entwässert von der Quelle bis zur Mündung ein Gebiet von 24.167 Quadratkilometern.
Seit dem 3. Oktober 1990 ist die Saale von km 0,0 bis 124,2 Bundeswasserstraße und wird von der Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes betreut.
