Unterneusulza befindet sich am Westrand von Großheringen und ist nur wenige Meter vom Stadtrand Bad Sulza entfernt. Durch das Tal fließt die Ilm und es führt die Bahnstrecke von Halle, Leipzig nach Weimar, Erfurt und weiter durch das Tal.
Der Ort Unterneusulza entstand durch die Salzgewinnung im Ilmtal. 1863 wurde die erste Saline gebaut. Man geht davon aus, dass Unterneusulza als ein Folgebau entstand. Die Saline Neusulza gehörte als Exklave zum wettinischen Amt Camburg, welches aufgrund mehrerer Teilungen im Lauf seines Bestehens unter der Hoheit verschiedener Ernestinischer Herzogtümer stand. 1826 kam das Gebiet als Teil der Exklave Camburg vom Herzogtum Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg zum Herzogtum Sachsen-Meiningen.
