Das Königreich Sachsen entstand aus dem Kurfürstentum Sachsen und existierte von 1806 bis 1918. Es gehörte von 1806 bis 1815 dem Rheinbund und von 1815 bis 1866 dem Deutschen Bund an. Seit 1867 war es Bundesstaat des Norddeutschen Bundes und von 1871 bis 1918 des Deutschen Reiches. Die Hauptstadt war Dresden.
Hervorgegangen ist das Königreich aus dem Kurfürstentum Sachsen, dessen um 1800 erreichter Gebietsstand hauptsächlich im Ergebnis der Übertragung der sächsischen Kurwürde an die wettinischen Markgrafen von Meißen 1423, dem Übergang der Kurwürde von den ernestinischen an die albertinischen Wettiner nach der Wittenberger Kapitulation 1547 sowie dem Zugewinn von Ober- und Niederlausitz im Prager Frieden 1635 resultierte.
