Die Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena war im Wintersemester 2019/2020 mit 17.659 Studierenden, 392 Professuren, mehr als 8.600 Mitarbeitern und über 200 Studienmöglichkeiten die größte Hochschule und die einzige Volluniversität im Freistaat Thüringen. Unter den Studienmöglichkeiten befinden sich auch viele sogenannte kleine Fächer wie Kaukasiologie, Rumänistik, Wissenschaftsgeschichte und Indogermanistik.
Sie gehört zu den traditionsreichsten und ältesten Universitäten Deutschlands und ist ein Mitglied der Coimbra-Gruppe. Zum 450-jährigen Bestehen der Universität erhielt Jena den Titel Stadt der Wissenschaft 2008.
