Am 15. November 1966 verunglückte eine Boeing 727-100 auf dem Pan-Am-Flug 708 von Frankfurt am Main nach Berlin. Die Maschine stürzte kurz vor der Landung aus ungeklärter Ursache ab.
Die Boeing 727-21 mit dem Luftfahrzeugkennzeichen N317PA und dem Namen Clipper De Soto wurde am 20. Januar 1966 an die Pan American World Airways ausgeliefert. Später wurde sie in Clipper München umbenannt.
Die Clipper München wurde tagsüber für den Passagierbetrieb und nachts als Frachtflugzeug genutzt.
