U 48 war ein deutsches U-Boot vom Typ VII B, das im Zweiten Weltkrieg von der Kriegsmarine eingesetzt wurde. Mit über 300.000 BRT versenkten Schiffsraum gilt es als das erfolgreichste Boot des Zweiten Weltkrieges.
Der Bauauftrag für das Boot wurde am 21. November 1936 an die Germaniawerft in Kiel vergeben. Die Kiellegung erfolgte am 10. März 1937, der Stapellauf am 8. März 1938, die Indienststellung unter Kapitänleutnant Herbert Schultze am 22. April 1939.
