Im Jahre 1983 gründeten Heimatfreunde den Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Sögel, der seit 1985 den Namen Heimatverein Sögel e.V. trägt. Schon bei der Gründung wurde der Wunsch geäußert, ein eigenes Heimathaus zu besitzen. Doch es sollte noch 6 Jahre dauern, bis auf der sogenannten Fehnwiese der erste Spatenstich erfolgte.
Glück hatte der Heimatverein, als ein geeignetes Fachwerkhaus der Familie Niemann in Wettrup bei Fürstenau, das zum Abbruch anstand, zum Verkauf angeboten wurde. Fachwerk und Gebälk dieses Hauses stammen aus dem Jahre 1807, sind also mehr als 200 Jahre alt. Diese Holzkonstruktion, eine Meisterleistung der Zimmerleute, fand unverändert Verwendung beim Wiederaufbau. Die Gemeinde und Mitglieder des Heimatvereins arbeiteten mit vereinten Kräften an der Wiedererrichtung.
