In 1983 richtten lokale geschiedenisliefhebbers de Sögelse Vereniging voor Lokale Geschiedenis en Toerisme op, die sinds 1985 bekendstaat als de Sögelse Vereniging voor Lokale Geschiedenis (Heimatverein Sögel e.V.). Al bij de oprichting werd de wens geuit om een eigen lokaal historisch museum te hebben. Het zou echter nog zes jaar duren voordat de eerste spade in de grond werd gezet op de zogenaamde Fehnwiese-weide.
De plaatselijke historische vereniging had het geluk dat een geschikt vakwerkhuis van de familie Niemann in Wettrup bij Fürstenau, dat op de slooplijst stond, te koop kwam. De houten constructie en balken van dit huis dateren uit 1807, waardoor het meer dan 200 jaar oud is. Deze houten constructie, een meesterwerk van timmerwerk, werd ongewijzigd gebruikt bij de wederopbouw. De gemeenschap en leden van de plaatselijke historische vereniging werkten samen aan de herbouw.
